THE STORY
THE FIRST MARATHON
Debbie has always been active, but has become more so with her addiction to running. When we first met, she smoked and excercised infrequently. A bike ride on the Burke - Gilman taken on the day she quit smoking almost killed her. Now look at her eleven years later completing her first marathon!! She is in better shape now than when she was in her twenties.
My influence in the beginning of our relationship didn't help matters much to her physical health. I like to cook and eat and did all the cooking at the time. I also made her lunches for work. Needless to say, I fed all of us quite well, a little too well for her. About a year of that and a step on the scale one day and she headed for the Y and began the regime of exercise that continues to this day.

Meanwhile, I did just the opposite. Sat around on my ass for the next decade and amassed an enormous gut and enjoyed life as a fat boy. We kind of swapped our way of thinking. I
She got started by going to the Kent YWCA and doing aerobics about three times a week. When we moved back up tp Seattle, she joined a gym and kept it up even dragging me along sometimes, but I never kept with it like she did. After we bought our house in Laurelhurst she switched to Pro Robics and began going even more often. The gym location was perfect for her to stop by on the way to and from work and the instructors were great. It was a positive social thing for her too, as she did not know many people in the Seattle area, and she met quite a few new friends. She was truely dedicated and hated it when she couldn't go,

had always been in the gym while living in Southern California and kept in great shape. Now it was Debbie's turn. She has done a great job and I am proud of her.

which was not often. After a while, she grew tired of just doing aerobics and started cross training. She would take her aerobics then started kickboxing and threw in some cycling classes in the mix. Soon she was leaving other women half her age sweating in the dust! I was in awe! During one of her aerobic classes, she hurt her ankle and had to take a break. This did not set well with her and not being able to do some form of exercise was not an option. So began her running!!!
It all started when she decided to walking the treadmill while her ankle was on the mend. She began with a mile or two and slowly started to add distance. At this point, most of her gym visits were in the early morning before going to work. She only had a certain amount of time to walk her mileage, get showered and began her commute, so adding much more distance was becoming impossible. As her ankle healed, she started jogging a little. In the beginning it was walk a mile, jog a mile, walk a mile and so on. Before long she just started running the whole time and slowly added distance as time progressed. She was a morning fixture on the treadmill and had her favorite one. She and her friend Meghan became Queens of the Pro - Robics treadmills. One didn't want to mess with them and their machines.

One time some new treadmills arrived at the gym and the girls soon found their faves! Each morning they would be there bright and early, even before the gym opened, ready to snag their spots and start the ritual. It seems that two women were waiting for the treadmills that Debbie and Meghan happened to be using one fine morn even though there were plenty of others available for their jogging pleasure. They expressed their discontent about them "hogging"
the treadmills they wanted to use. This obviously did not sit well with the Debster and she let them have it! They each probably lost a couple of pounds off their tail ends after Deb's butt chewing. Everybody that had seen her in action, knew from then on, not to get in the way of Deb and her running! No one ever did again. Debbie ran constantly and was up to six miles a run, four, five, sometimes six times a week. Soon, running just wasn't enough!

THE RACES
Debbie is easily bored and as much as she loves running, the treadmill just wasn't enough. There are many organized races here in the Northwest just as there are everywhere around the country and world. One of her running buddies suggested she enter some and have some more fun! She was hesitant at first, thinking she couldn't match up with people in competitive running. After all, some do it for nothing more than prize money and many others do it for the sheer competition. When she finally realized that a whole lot of people do it for the fun of it, she entered her first one, the St. Paddy's Day Dash a 3.5 mileer. She was nervous beforehand, but after it was said and done, she had a blast and was hooked for good!!! Not only was she hooked, but that was only the beginning! Five months after her first sanctioned run, she was doing the Danskin Women's Triathlon. In that race she not only ran 3.1 miles, but also swam 1/2 mile, and biked 12 miles. After it was over, she was ready to do it again. That was a turning point for her.
Running became a series of challenges in 2001, and she decided to join a running club and train for a full marathon. She trained diligently and became one of the stronger runners in her group. Soon she was just running the shorter races for fun and to run with me, as I had too started running. I didn't do it for the reasons she did and had no desire to run a full marathon. My motivation was to be able to still enjoy my favorite foods and beverages and not revert back into the pig I had become! She started running some half marathons in preparation for the big event and Tori and I even ran one...well Tori ran a couple! As the big day approached, Debbie was stronge and ready for it. Just weeks before the marathon she injured her left leg slightly. At first she thought she was getting shin splints and tried to lay off as much as she could without losing too much of her edge and fitness. The closer it got, the more the nerves started rattling her. She knew she could run the damn thing with no problem, but was worried about her leg. In her mind, she had come too far and trained too hard to not run it, so run it she did! With a sore leg and two bathroom breaks, she finished and with a time that was not bad! We are all soooooo very proud of her! I could never do it!

Unfortunately upon returning home, her leg did not get any better, and a trip to the doctor was made. An MRI showed a stress fracture in her tibia, and her running days were suspened. She had ran the whole marathon with a fractured shin! Now after a few months off, she is back and logging new races, short ones at first. No matter what happens to my girl, she has found herself in running and loves it and will go until she is old and grey!

It has already happened, most unexpectedly and without full training!! She has been back to training for her next marathon scheduled for October in Dublin, Ireland. We decided to go up to Vancouver and run the Adidas Vancouver Half Marathon in May. Upon arriving at the pre race expo to get our numbers and race packets, we discover that we are both registered to run the full marathon!!! We also discover that the half is closed becouse it is so full. I frieked!! There was no way I was ready to run a full marathon!!! I finally had my name put on the list of full's that were running the half, so they could correct my chip time and enter it into the half standings. Well Debbie decides that she wants the medal and the shirt for the full marathon and decides to run it anyway!!! That is typical of the girl I married and there was no way of talking her out of it. Come race day, in the pouring rain, she ran it and finished! I can't believe she did it. Her race time was slow, but hey, she wasn't even prepared and ready. Luckily, she didn't hurt herself either, just a little strain on her hip (IT Band most likely). The determination of my girl never ceases to amaze me. Now, she's back at again after a little rest and should blow em away in her next race!!!!

We went to the beautiful city of Cincinnati, Ohio for Debbie's third marathon! She wanted to do this one because she loved the "flying pig" theme and also loved the medal. God, she is cute!! She wasn't well trained once again, too much on her plate and didn't have enough time for running, but she managed to finish without any injury this time. I went up to the 21 mile marker and ran with her the last five miles giving her moral support and encouragement. She was tired and emotional, but made the finish line. The weather didn't make it any easier with it being cold and pouring down rain most of the race. She's my little trooper though!!! I wanted to put up more pictures, but wasn't able to take any of her and she didn't like any of the race photos, so the one you see is all there is!! In 2004 she entered the New York City Marathon and trained really hard, just a little too hard, and got yet another stress fracture in the same leg! She had to defer her entry, and was automatically in for 2005, but she wasn't ready, so she passed on it. The year 2005 was a slow one for her as she only ran one official race, but that didn't mean she wasn't running on a consistent basis. There will be more races after she graduates from school and more marathons rest assured! Now that she has graduated from the University of Phoenix, she has free time to train for her next endeavor and that would have been a marathon in Phoenix for the Team In Training, but once again, she hurt her ankle by running in the dark while training for it and had to give that one up. She is back at it now and feels just fine and is running 5 -6 days a week and increasing her distance slowly but surely. She is not sure if another marathon is in her future, but is shooting for the Super Jock n Jill half in September. Stay tuned for more running tales from Deb's world of running.
